Imola Circuit (Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari)

The Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari, better known as Imola, is located in the north-east of Italy. The circuit is named after Ferrari's late founder, Enzo Ferrari, and his son, Alfredo "Dino" Ferrari. It is considered Ferrari’s home circuit because it's only at 80 km (50 miles) of the Ferrari factory in Maranello. During some years there have been two Grand Prix’s held in Italy, one in Monza and one in Imola. Two make this distinction on the F1 calendar, the Grand Prix in Imola has had up to 3 different names: the San Marino Grand Prix (named after the nearby state), the Grand Prix of Italy and the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, in honour of the region where the circuit is located.

The circuit was constructed in 1953 and was originally a very fast, flowing circuit with a series of relatively gentle bends. In 1972 a series of chicanes were added in order to improve safety. The circuit has since undergone frequent and regular updates and now features a challenging mix of straightaways, high speed curves and medium and slow chicanes. The current circuit length is 4.909 km (3.050 mi), and it is still one of the few major international circuits to run in an anti-clockwise direction.

Imola has been the scene of both triumph, tragedy and controversy. There was the dramatic weekend in 1994 in which Roland Ratzenberger and triple world champion Ayrton Senna lost their lives. On the other side of the spectrum, we had one of Formula One’s greatest moments when a young Fernando Alonso stamped himself as a future world champion by defeating Michael Schumacher to win the 2005 San Marino Grand Prix.
